Board of Directors

Timothy M. Elliott


Qualifications: Bachelor of Arts from the St. Francis Xavier University; LLB from the University of Ottawa.

Business Experience: Mr. Elliott joined the Board of Directors in 2007 and became Chairman of the Board in November 2015. Mr. Elliott has worked in the international oil and gas industry for 30 years. Mr. Elliott started his career in the oil and gas industry as an attorney, and has served as an officer and director of several public companies with operations throughout the Middle East, Asia, Europe, Africa and South America. Mr. Elliott's experience includes building and managing public companies, including securing financing by accessing both equity and debt markets. From February 2006 to September 2016 Mr. Elliott was the President and Chief Executive Officer of Serinus Energy Inc. ("Serinus"), a company whose shares trade on the TSX and WSX. He was previously with the Lundin Group from 1987 to 1999, where he was a Director and Vice President of International Petroleum Corporation.

Stephen C. Akerfeldt


Qualifications: Bachelor of Arts from the University of Waterloo; CA with Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario.

Business Experience: Mr. Akerfeldt joined the Board of Directors in January 2003 and was the Chairman of the Board of Directors until March 2007. Mr. Akerfeldt also acted as interim President and CEO from February 2003 until May 2005. He is currently the Chairman of the Jura audit committee. Mr. Akerfeldt was with Coopers & Lybrand (now PriceWaterhouseCoopers) for 22 years, 13 years as a partner where he was responsible for the audits of a diverse number of corporate clients. Mr. Akerfeldt has been the President and a director of Ritz Plastics Inc., a private company that produces plastic parts primarily for the automotive industry by injection moulding, since 1999. 

Nadeem Farooq

Chief Executive Officer and Director

Qualifications: Chartered Accountant

Business Experience: Mr. Farooq has served as the Chief Financial Officer of SEPL since February 2008. Prior to joining SEPL, Mr. Farooq was employed with A.F. Ferguson & Co. (a PricewaterhouseCoopers member firm) where he managed accounting, tax planning and audits for various domestic and international oil & gas concerns from May 2005 to January 2008. He brings with him significant expertise in finance and sector specific economics. 

Syed Hasan Akbar Kazmi


Qualifications: MBA from the Institute of Business administration in Karachi; MA in Economics from the University of Karachi.

Business Experience: Mr. Kazmi has a diverse background in finance, private equity and principal finance in a variety of sectors, including Resources and Oil & Gas. He is also a Director of SEPL Energy Pty Limited and served as its Chief Executive Officer from 2005 to 2009. Mr. Kazmi has also worked for Fauji Foundation, Askari Group, LASMO and Citibank.

Stephen C. Smith


Qualifications: Bachelor of Science (Jt. Hons) in Economics and Mathematics from the University of Bristol; CA with the Institute of Chartered Accountants, London, England.

Business Experience:Mr. Smith joined Ernst & Young in 1991 and qualified as a Chartered Accountant before joining European Capital, a London based project and corporate finance company, where he advised on over US$2 billion of debt and equity financings. Mr. Smith then helped found Techpacific Capital, a Hong Kong investment firm. After Techpacific's initial public offering, he became Chief Financial Officer.

In 2004, Mr. Smith joined JS Group, one of Pakistan's leading financial services groups and a diversified investor in Pakistan and internationally.  He sits on the board of Jahangir Siddiqui & Co. Ltd., the group's publicly-listed investment holding company. In addition, Mr. Smith is responsible for JS Group's international activities and oversees its private equity business.  He sits on the board of a number of privately-held companies in which JS Group has an investment.

Frank Turner


Mr. Turner is Co-Chair of Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP's Asia Pacific initiative. He previously served as National Co-Chair of his firm's Corporate Department and was a member of its Operations Committee. Mr. Turner currently practices from the firm's Calgary office in the areas of mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance and governance. He routinely advises companies and other enterprises in the resource, financial services and technology sectors on matters involving acquisitions, dispositions, strategic alliances, governance and capital markets transactions. Mr. Turner has particular expertise advising clients in Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and other parts of the world, including sovereign wealth funds and state-owned enterprises, on acquisitions and investments in Canada. Mr. Turner has previously worked in the firm's New York and Toronto offices and has served on secondment with investment banks in both those cities (Morgan Stanley and BMO Nesbitt Burns).
